How To Witness
A. Establish Rapport with People
1. Learn to start saying hello. - Proverbs 18:24a - A man that has friends must show himself friendly: Learn to say:
a. Hey. How you doin?
b. Are you from Macon?
c. Hey. You look familiar. (If they really do. Don't lie about it)
d. Hey. How you doin? Did you get one of these yet? (Hand him a million dollar bill tract or any tract and swing the conversation to the spiritual by asking him if he has a Christian or church background)
e. What do you do for a living?
f. Are you married? Do you have any kids? What does your husband do?
2. Or turn a need into an opportunity to start a conversation and then share the Gospel. ex. Jesus asked the woman at the well for water and then proceeded to share the spiritual. ex. When asking for assistance at a store with the clerk that's helping you find something. After he's helped you, you can swing to the spiritual by asking him or her if he or she got one of these yet. Hand them a gospel tract and proceed with the Gospel sharing.
B. Swing from the natural to the spiritual
1. Start the witnessing encounter - Use this acronym for a guide: WDJD (What Did Jesus Do) Witnessing encounters should mention, sin, righthousness and judgement. John 16:7-11, Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper(the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: If we are instruments of the Holy Spirit then we will allow these warnings to come out of our mouths when we share with others. Say this:
a. Do you have a christian background? What do you think happens when someone passes from this life to the next.?
b. Where do you think you're going?
c. Would you consider yourself to be a good person?
d. Do you think you've kept the ten commandments?
1) (At this point, give the good test) Say, Let's see if that's true.
a) Why we use the law first in witnessing (Law to the Proud, Grace to the Humble)
(1) As a mirror to bring the knowledge of sin in a person. Psalm 19:7, The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
(a) Romans 7:7, What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
(b) Romans 7:12-13, Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.
(c) Galatians 3:24, Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
(d) It stops the self righteous mouth. Romans3:19, Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
(e) Proverbs 20:6, Most men will proclaim each his own goodness,... Most men think they are good. The commandments will show them that in reality, they are not good in the eyes of God. Let's say you have a bottle of medicine and you offer the medicine to someone that does not know that he is sick. Would he see the importance of taking that medicine? No. He'd probably think you to be a pretty foolish person to offer him that. However, if you show him his sickness and give him proof from the doctor he'd probably take the medicine. It's the same way with the lost. They will not take the medicine of the Gospel until they're convinced of their sin sickness. In addition to that, you are not offering them the Gospel for a better life but to escape the wrath to come. I Cor. 1:18, For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
(f) You bypass the intellect and aim for the conscience with the Commandments. Romans 2:15-16, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. If someone tries to divert the conversation with an intellectual argument, you can touch on it, but then steer it back by convicting him of his sin, righteousness and the judgement that he'll have to face one day, by using the commandments.
b) Have you ever told lie? (Yes) (the ninth commandment) What does that make you? (a liar)
c) Have you ever taken something that didn't belong to you? (the eighth commandment) What does that make you? (a thief)
d) Have you ever used God's name in vain? (the third commandment) (Yes) That's called blasphemy. Your taking God's name and using God as a cuss word or a word for disgust.
e) Jesus said, "It’s been said of old, 'Do not commit adultery', but I say unto you , whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her, has committed adultery already in his heart." Have you ever looked with lust on someone? (Yes)
f) So by your own admission you're a lying, thieving, blasphemous adulterer. If God were to Judge you by those standards, will he see you innocent or guilty on the day of Judgment?
g) If you're guilty, where should he send you? Heaven or Hell? (Destiny)
2. (At this point, you want to find concern in him.) Ask him, Does that concern you?
a. If he says yes, then he is ready to hear the Gospel.
b. If he says no, then you need to work on him some more until he's concerned. He's still proud and needs to be convinced of the seriousness of his status before God. He needs to be concerned for his soul. He won't take the medicine until he's convinced he's sick and needs help. Luke 5:31-32, Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
1) Ask him, would you sell one of your eyes for a million dollars? Would you sell both of them for 20 million? Of course you wouldn't. Your eyes are precious to you. They're priceless right? Well, the eyes are just the windows of your soul. How much more precious is your soul? Jesus said, what would it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? You love your life don't you? Doesn't it concern you that you would spend eternity in Hell? After he or she is concerned, then you can share the Gospel.
